Those in the Integral lineage of thought have long maintained that a meta-narrative such as Integral Theory – or narratives similar in scope and concision – will emerge and be widely adopted during the next stage of cultural evolution (e.g., following the peak and initial decline of postmodernism). This presentation will argue that this may not be correct, as it underestimates the demands that a model with the scope and depth of the Integral framework places upon those who might adopt it – or something akin to it – as an orientating worldview. This presentation will explore this issue in detail, making the case for a stage of “metamodernism” which is needed to bridge postmodernism and a more properly Integral stage of cultural development. Two major issues that stand-out are the grasping of construct-awareness as well as the role of esoteric spiritual insights and attainments, neither of which have a necessary connection to metamodernism, but both of which are deeply operative in our understanding of Integral. This presentation will draw deeply from the developmental literature and will close with a set of recommendations for how to conceptualize the teaching, encouragement, and framing of vertical development in a social and individual sense in the upcoming decades.
