We Space, one path to the future, remains elusive to achieve owing in part to a difficulty defining “resonance.” Dr. Steven Porges’ Polyvagal Theory, derived from over 30 years of research on the Vagus Nerve, can offer an upper right quadrant point view of how humans “resonate” and how our nervous systems serve connection and our future.
This theory is based on the discovery of a second branch of the Vagus Nerve that differs from the older Dorsal branch in structure and function. The older Vagus defends us by shutting us down in the presence of a life threat. The newer Ventral branch calms us down when we feel safe. That calming effect enables a “Social Engagement System,” unique to humans, which enhances our ability to connect– both with ourselves through self-regulation and with others through “co-regulation” and this, in turn, can restore homeostasis, enhance health, and promote growth. A case can be made for how it might also support the state experience of “resonance.”
